This is a summary of how our school delivers music education to all our pupils across three areas – curriculum music, co-curricular provision and musical experiences – and what changes we are planning in future years. This information is to help pupils and parents or carers understand what our school offers and who we work with to support our pupils’ music education.
Part A: Curriculum Music
This is about what we teach in lesson time, how much time is spent teaching music and any music qualifications or awards that pupils can achieve.
We follow the Charanga scheme for music through the whole school. This starts with our youngest children. Each year group takes part in a 40 mins-1 hour lesson per week.
In Year 4, 5 and 6 – Oak Class, the children are taught by a music specialist from the Oxfordshire County Music Service for one hour a week for 20 weeks. This scheme is called First Access. Oak class will learn ukulele for ten weeks and folk music (various instruments) for 10 weeks. Children are loaned ukuleles/ instruments to practice at home. This is provided free of any charge to the children.
Part B: Extra-curricular music opportunities
This is about opportunities for pupils to sing and play music, outside of lesson time, including choirs, ensembles and bands, and how pupils can make progress in music beyond the core curriculum.
We have a piano teacher and a violin teacher who offer lessons to children. These are accessible to all and we can use Pupil Premium money to assist with lessons where necessary.
We welcome any other music tuition in school if parents have expressed a desire for additional music lessons.
We also have a weekly singing assembly where children learn traditional worship songs and assembly songs.
Children in Foundation Stage have access to musical percussion instruments during their child-led activity time.
We advertise music clubs for holidays and opportunities that come from the county music service.
We take part in community events such as concerts in the Abbey or the Festival of Voices which involve a choir on an annual basis. We receive assistance from the junior choir master from Dorchester Abbey with this.
Part C: Musical experiences
This is about all the other musical events and opportunities that we organise, such as singing in assembly, concerts and shows, and trips to professional concerts.
Every year FS and Key Stage 1 children take part in a Nativity at Christmas which involves singing and some percussion. Key Stage 2 take part in an annual musical show in the summer term. These shows are performed to parents and the community.
We are frequently invited to take part in events in the Abbey such as Christmas concerts and charity singing which we always agree to.
We receive help from the Abbey music team with these events.
We have been to shows at the Royal Festival Hall performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra and shows performed in the Abbey.
We attend services in the Abbey at Christmas, Easter and Summer and sing hymns as part of this experience.
In the future
This is about what the school is planning for subsequent years.
|
We aim to host a drumming workshop at some point in school as part of our curriculum enrichment. |
|
We would like to have an array of outside musical instruments for free play. Fundraising is currently being directed towards this. |
|
We would like to be part of future events in the Abbey such as Radio Oxford/ charity concerts. |
|
We have a group of children who have requested guitar lessons from the County Music Service. |
|
We would also like to plan in a music week – including opportunities for children to busk in the playground and potentially a flash mob somewhere in the community. |
