Early Years Foundation Stage
Welcome to Dorchester St Birinus C of E Primary School's Early Years Foundation Stage
At Dorchester St Birinus, we believe that the early years of a child's education are crucial in laying the foundations for their future success. Our Reception class, currently taught alongside Year 1 in Willow Class, is a nurturing and stimulating environment where children are encouraged to explore, discover, and develop a love of learning.
A Caring and Supportive Environment
We understand that starting school can be an exciting yet daunting experience for both children and parents. Our highly skilled Early Years staff are dedicated to ensuring that your child feels happy, safe, and supported from the moment they walk through our doors. We create a warm and welcoming atmosphere, where every child is valued as an individual and encouraged to reach their full potential.
A Broad and Engaging Curriculum
Our Early Years curriculum is designed to foster children's natural curiosity and support their holistic development. Through a range of hands-on, play-based activities, children have the opportunity to explore all areas of the Foundation Stage, including physical development, emotional well-being, and early literacy and numeracy skills.
Developing Independence and Resilience
At Dorchester St Birinus, we believe in empowering children to become independent, resilient learners. Our children benefit from a well-equipped outdoor area, including a verandah and additional outside space, where they can engage in activities that develop their gross and fine motor skills, problem-solving abilities, and a sense of exploration and discovery.
Nurturing a Love of Reading and Writing
Developing early literacy skills is a key focus in our Early Years provision. Children begin their phonics journey using the Twinkl Phonics programme, and are given "I can" reading books once they are ready to start their independent reading journey. We also encourage a love of reading for pleasure by providing "we can" books that children can share at home.
Fostering Creativity and Understanding the World
Our children have ample opportunities to express their creativity through a variety of artistic activities, such as painting, drawing, and printing. They also explore the world around them, investigating seasons, learning about different countries, and developing an understanding of their place in the local and global community.
Preparing for the Future
At Dorchester St Birinus, we believe in nurturing happy, healthy, and informed individuals who are well-prepared for the next stage of their educational journey. Our dedicated staff work tirelessly to ensure that every child in our care is given the support and opportunities they need to thrive and to let their light shine.
We would be delighted to welcome you and your child to our school. Please don't hesitate to call us and arrange a visit to see our Early Years classrooms in action. We look forward to sharing our vibrant and inclusive learning community with you.
